?????????
On April 17 I adopted 4 girls from a rescuer. I named them Rice (Himi), Soda (PEW), Trex (Rex), and Unity (Std.). I named her Unity because, 1), I needed a U name for the Alfabit Rats, and 2), She came to me united with her sisters from the same litter.
Unity is a Black Hooded Dumbo Standard Doe with a ragged hooded marking. One of her sisters is a Rex with a wild hooded marking. It looks like Unity was named for a third reason.........seems about a week before the rescuer took them in Unity was united with a male while still in the hands of the people who first had them. More then likely her mate was her brother.
On April 29, at around 6:15pm, Unity gave me the gift of 5 beautiful pups. She's a nervous mom, she doesn't know me, and she felt that I was a threat to her newborns, so much so that in the few times that I peeked in on her she would grab a pup and race around the cage frantically trying to find a safer place to hide it.
I left her alone for a few days and when I peeked in on the family on Friday, May 01, there was only 4 pups in the nest. The fifth baby was never found :(
The babies will be 2 weeks old May 13. They are HUGE! I'm guessing because Unity only has to raise 4 instead of 8 or more. On the average each plump little pup weighs 25 grams and he/she is 12 centimeters from tip of nose to tip of tail as of May 08.
Unity is a very relaxed mom, spending much time resting on top of her hut, away from the kids. Again I'm guessing this is because they don't wear her out with nursing. Oh Unity, just wait until their mobility kicks in, LOL!
